What to Expect From Rottweiler Rescue
First, a word of caution - although most US rescue organisations are responsible and consist of volunteers giving their time freely there are no laws regarding who can set themselves up as a 'rescue organisation.' Literally ANYONE can call themselves a US rescue organisation and give their friends titles such as 'President' and 'Director' without these titles having any meaning whatsoever. There are no US regulations covering the welfare of animals placed in their care and no regulations covering the behaviour of these individuals - so, exercise caution and make sure the US rescue society you approach is responsible. We have listed the one's we have not heard negative comments about on the page listing Rescue Organisations by State. Why You Should Consider A Rescue: Many pets find themselves in rescue organisations through no fault of their own. Many reasons are given, the most common being an owner dies, divorce, a new baby or a change of home and a landlord that restricts pets. The latter becoming increasingly common in US Rottweiler Rescue. Breed rescue volunteers that take the pet it will evaluate it's behaviour, provide any necessary veterinary care and neuter/spay before the pet is adopted. Pets with a bite record or serious medical conditions are not offered for adoption. If the situation isn't clear then they may be offered to families, but carry strict instructions on their adoption process, eg to families without children/other pets, etc. You can, therefore, have some confidence that your pet will be largely free of anti-social behaviour. You can also have the added advantage of a pet that has already gone through the destructive puppy stage! It will probably be housebroken and may even have a grasp of basic obedience. It will probably be full grown so you need have no worries regarding its eventual size and you will also be able to get a good idea of its personality. You should bear in mind that the responsible rescue organisations will want to ask YOU a lot of questions before letting you have a rescued pet. Remember that they are placing the needs of the pet first - it is always the first priority to find a 'forever' home for the pets. The last thing they want is a pet returning for one of the reasons mentioned above! Normally they will want to meet each member of your family and will require a home visit to check on your property. In certain cases they will also ask for confirmation from your landlord that he has no objection - especially in the case of Rottweilers where some landlords have been known to restrict dogs by breed. Part of this process is also to match you with a dog that suits your needs. Many people choose a pet/dog without giving proper consideration to the typical behaviour of the breed and this can lead to rescue dogs being returned. Different home situations call for different dog personalities, and rescue volunteers can help you make the perfect match.. You are also unlikely to receive the dogs registration papers - this being a precautionary measure to avoid unscrupulous breeders further adding to the rescue numbers problem. It is not unknown for them to use the papers of the rescue dogs for their own dogs. However if you want to show your rescued pure-bred dog you may apply for an 'Indefinite Listing Privilege,' which will allow you to compete with your dog in AKC Sanctioned Agility and Obedience events. Last, but by no means least, you will be giving a deserving pet a good home!
